History of Capital Gymnastics

Structure of Capital Gymnastics

Capital Gymnastics is a non-profit organization run by a volunteer committee. This committee consists of a president, treasurer, secretary, and competition secretary and also includes several parents. There is an annual general meeting each year, at which members are asked to nominate people for the committee and then vote to appoint them to their roles.

Income and Fundraising

Capital Gymnastics generates income from three main sources: term fees, community grants, and fundraising activities. Term fees cover the majority of our operational costs. Community grants are applied for specific items (e.g. rent, or pieces of equipment). Fundraising activities include our annual Capital Juniors Competition and Central Competitions and the occasional Saturday morning sausage sizzle.

Capital Gymnastics began its journey in the early 1970s, rooted in the halls of Wellington Girls College. Initially known as Capital Girls Gymnastics Club, the program offered artistic and rhythmic gymnastics as an after-school and weekend activity. It started modestly with just 15 gymnasts and faced the logistical challenge of setting up and collapsing gym equipment for each session.

In 1998, the club found a more permanent home by leasing premises at 150 Hutt Road, Kaiwharawhara. A decade later, in October 2008, the club, now renamed Capital GymSports, relocated to the National School of Dance and Drama at 11 Hutchison Road, Newtown. This move marked a new chapter in providing a dedicated space for gymnastics.

The journey didn’t stop there; in November 2011, Capital Gymnastics moved into its current home within the Te Whaea complex on Hutchison Road. The club has continued to evolve and expand, most recently moving into two new spaces within the Wellington Indoor Sports area. These new facilities allow our members to enjoy a more spacious and better-equipped environment, fostering both training and play in a community that cherishes movement and fun.
